Health risk analysis
GIS alerts this week focus strongly on food safety. The presence of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat ham can lead to listeriosis, with fever, diarrhoea and muscle pain; in pregnant women it may cause miscarriage or neonatal infection. Under EU food law, Listeria is not permitted in ready-to-eat products during their shelf life.
Excess opium alkaloids in blue poppy seeds may cause opioid-like poisoning symptoms: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and, in severe cases, respiratory depression. Perchlorates in green tea interfere with iodine uptake by the thyroid, which is particularly harmful for infants, children and people with thyroid disorders.
Toy-related alerts show two main hazard types. First, excessive boron migration from BIGTOYS slime – ingestion or prolonged skin contact with boron compounds can damage the reproductive system and cause long-term health issues. Second, small strong magnets in fishing sets, which if swallowed can attract each other through intestinal walls, leading to obstruction or perforation requiring emergency surgery.
GIF communications highlight quality problems with medicines used in cancer therapy (Bendamustine Glenmark) and in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (Risperidone Teva). Too little active substance or abnormal release profiles may render treatment ineffective and trigger relapse or worsening of symptoms. Visible particles in Teicoplanin Pharmline pose additional risks when injected intravenously, including inflammatory reactions and vascular emboli.
For electronics and brush-cutter attachments, the risks are mainly mechanical trauma and heavy-metal exposure. Lead-containing headphones threaten the environment and, indirectly, human health, while chain attachments that may break pose a direct risk of head and eye injuries to users and bystanders.
Stores and institutions involved
Major retail chains are implicated in several high-impact food alerts. Carrefour is involved in the GIS ham alert, Lidl in the Gelatelli Dubai Style Chocolate ice cream allergen case and Dino in the Bakaliowy Targ blue poppy seeds opium alkaloid exceedance. Consumers should carefully check batch numbers and best-before dates provided in the official communications.
Medicinal product issues reported by GIF concern Bendamustine Glenmark and three strengths of Risperidone Teva, as well as Teicoplanin Pharmline. These medicines are dispensed mainly through pharmacies and hospitals, and the decisions on withdrawal, suspension or marketing prohibition are binding for healthcare professionals and wholesalers.
UOKiK warnings linked to the EU Safety Gate system concern magnetic toys, BIGTOYS slime, phthalate-containing dolls, Webski wireless headphones and several chain cutting attachments for brush cutters. Even where no specific retailer is named, consumers should use the EAN codes, batch numbers and product images published with the GIS alerts, UOKiK warnings and GIF communications to identify affected items.
Consumer advice
If you have any of the recalled GIS food products at home – especially PG ham from batch 1000-188, Bakaliowy Targ poppy seeds P-5849/01 or Gelatelli ice cream from the listed batches – do not consume them. Secure the product and return it to the point of purchase. In practice, retailers usually accept returns even without a receipt and refund the purchase price.
For toys and electronics covered by UOKiK warnings, immediately stop using them. Remove magnetic fishing toys and BIGTOYS slime from children, and either return them to the seller or dispose of them safely. Lead-containing headphones such as the Webski models should not go into household waste; take them to an authorised e-waste collection point.
If you have consumed a product subject to a GIS alert and develop symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, sudden malaise or allergic reactions, contact a doctor or emergency service and take the product packaging with you. Patients using medicines mentioned in GIF communications should not stop treatment on their own; instead, they must consult their prescribing physician, who can switch to an alternative product if necessary.
Legal context
The system of GIS alerts, GIF communications and UOKiK warnings operates under Polish and EU law. In food safety, Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 sets general food law principles and establishes the RASFF network for rapid alert exchange between member states, enabling product withdrawals and risk communication to consumers.
For medicinal products, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate may order batch withdrawal, suspend marketing or prohibit placing a product on the market if it fails to meet the quality requirements laid down in its marketing authorisation. Consumers have a right to safe products and accurate information, while businesses are obliged to cooperate with authorities and remove unsafe items from sale.
Consumers can report suspected unsafe products to local sanitary inspectorates, pharmaceutical inspectorates or directly to UOKiK. A transparent system of GIS alerts, GIF communications and UOKiK warnings is designed to rapidly reduce risk and protect public health, particularly in sensitive areas such as food safety, pharmacotherapy and children’s products.
