10 GIS alerts and GIF notices – week 27–2 Aug

During 27.07.2026–02.08.2026 the Polish market surveillance authorities published 10 safety alerts on products available in Poland. These include GIS alerts on food safety, GIF notices about quality defects in medicines and UOKiK warnings on dangerous toys, kitchen appliances and workshop equipment. The most serious risks concern a critical hazard from small powerful magnets in a toy set, the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in raw sausage (metka type) and excessive levels of the toxic mycotoxin ochratoxin A in raisins. In addition, there are recalled products in the kitchen appliance category with electric shock hazards, as well as a faulty scissor jack and refrigerated trailer that may threaten road and workshop safety.

Magnetic toy – set of 36 blocks

Hazard: The toy contains small, very strong magnets (magnetic flux up to 2.44 T²mm²). If swallowed, they may attract each other through the intestinal walls, causing obstruction or perforation that requires urgent surgery. Potential effects include severe internal organ damage, surgical complications and a life-threatening condition.

Set of two plastic dolls

Hazard: The dolls contain an excessive concentration of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) – up to 0.448% by weight, above the 0.1% limit under REACH. DEHP may harm children’s health, damaging the reproductive system and affecting development with long-term exposure.

Teesa smoothie blender

Hazard: Due to inadequate design and insulation, the metal part of the blender can become live and the appliance is insufficiently protected against moisture. Users may touch live parts and suffer an electric shock, which can result in serious injuries and a life-threatening condition.

Botti hand mixer

Hazard: Because of inadequate design, the metal beater can come into contact with the metal motor housing, which is separated from live parts only by basic insulation. As a result, users may touch accessible live parts and suffer an electric shock.

Raw sausage of the “metka” type

Hazard: According to the GIS alert based on the EU RASFF system, Listeria monocytogenes was detected in 2 out of 5 samples per 25 g, although by law ready-to-eat food should be free from this bacterium (0 in 25 g). Listeria can cause severe foodborne illness and, in pregnant women, serious complications including miscarriage.

The most serious threats this week concern children and people who are particularly vulnerable to foodborne infections. GIS alerts on raw sausage and raisins have a direct impact on food safety. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium capable of multiplying even at refrigeration temperatures. After ingestion it may cause fever, diarrhoea and muscle pain; in pregnant women it can lead to miscarriage or premature birth, and in the elderly or immunocompromised it may progress to meningitis or sepsis. One quotable message is: GIS warns against consuming raw sausage from the affected batch because of Listeria monocytogenes.

In raisins, ochratoxin A was found at over twice the EU maximum level (21.0 ± 2.7 µg/kg versus the 8.0 µg/kg limit). This mycotoxin, produced by moulds, may damage the kidneys, impair the immune system and is considered potentially carcinogenic with long-term exposure.

For toys, the risks are both acute and chronic. Very strong small magnets can attract each other through intestinal walls after being swallowed, leading to tissue necrosis and perforations requiring urgent surgery. Phthalate DEHP, restricted under the REACH regulation, is an endocrine disruptor that may negatively affect the development of the reproductive system after years of exposure.

Electrical appliances reported by UOKiK as unsafe via the Safety Gate system pose an electric shock hazard. Inadequate insulation of live parts in the mixer and blender may cause severe burns, cardiac arrhythmias and, in extreme cases, cardiac arrest. Faults in the stability of the scissor jack and refrigerated trailer can lead to road and workshop accidents, including crushing injuries.

GIF communications on medicines primarily point to reduced treatment efficacy or unpredictable effects if tablets crumble, change hardness or deteriorate in storage, which is particularly relevant for patients with chronic cardiovascular or metabolic diseases.

The published information does not name specific retail chains, but all of the described products could have reached retail sale in Poland. GIS food safety alerts concern the distribution of raw sausage (metka) and raisins, which may have been sold both in major supermarket chains and smaller grocery stores.

GIS explicitly warns against consuming raw sausage (metka) from the affected batches containing Listeria monocytogenes and raisins with excessive ochratoxin A. Such products should be discarded or returned to the shop, keeping the receipt if possible.

People who may have consumed contaminated food should monitor their health. If they develop fever, severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain, intense headaches or neck stiffness, they should seek medical attention urgently. Pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems should react particularly quickly to any symptoms.

For recalled toys and electrical equipment, stop using them immediately. Recalled products – including the magnetic blocks, dolls with DEHP, mixer, blender, scissor jack and refrigerated trailer – can usually be returned at the point of purchase or in line with instructions from the manufacturer or distributor. In case of doubt, contact the retailer or check the UOKiK website for details.

For medicines covered by GIF notices, patients should not discontinue treatment on their own. Instead they should consult a pharmacist or physician, providing the name of the medicine, strength, batch number (for example HIY0325001 for Adnamil) and date of purchase. Pharmacists can propose suitable alternatives and explain how to return the affected batch.

Under Polish and EU law, consumers have the right to return unsafe or non‑compliant products and to receive full information on any risks. EU regulations governing maximum contaminant levels in food, as well as directives on toy safety, electrical equipment and machinery (such as the Toy Safety Directive, the Low Voltage Directive and the Machinery Directive), oblige manufacturers to monitor the market and respond quickly to detected defects. Public notices and recalls are key tools to reduce health and life risks for consumers, and regularly following such information significantly improves safety at home, including food safety and the safe use of everyday products.
