Raw hazelnuts
Samples of raw hazelnuts showed aflatoxin B1 at 24.2±7 µg/kg compared with a legal limit of 5 µg/kg, and total aflatoxins at 29.1±8.4 µg/kg compared with a legal limit of 10 µg/kg, representing a significant exceedance of safety limits for these mycotoxins. Potential effects: increased risk of liver damage, carcinogenic effects with long-term exposure, and particular concern for children, pregnant women and people with liver disease.
Raisins
In a batch of raisins, ochratoxin A was found at a level of 21.0 ± 2.7 µg/kg, exceeding the maximum permitted level of 8.0 µg/kg. Potential effects: long-term exposure may increase the risk of kidney damage, immune system disturbances and, at higher exposure, carcinogenic effects.
Dried figs
In the dried figs, ochratoxin A was found at 21.2 ± 4.3 µg/kg, exceeding the maximum allowed level of 8.0 µg/kg. Potential effects: kidney damage with long-term exposure, possible carcinogenic effects, and increased risk for children, pregnant women and people with kidney disease.
Dried sweet pepper
The dried sweet pepper was found to contain ochratoxin A at 29.9±8.4 µg/kg, exceeding the maximum permitted level of 20 µg/kg. Potential effects: long-term exposure may cause kidney damage, increase cancer risk, and negatively affect the immune system.
Dried figs
Mold growth was detected in the pulp of dried figs, indicating microbiological contamination with non-pathogenic micro-organisms, which may result from improper drying or storage conditions. Potential effects: deterioration of product quality and taste, possible gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive individuals, and a risk of harmful mold metabolites (e.g. mycotoxins) if visibly moldy products are consumed over time.
